The NMEA is a trade association of manufacturers, distributors, dealers, sales representatives, technicians and other professionals involved in the marine electronics industry.

• The NMEA Product Awards are presented annually to recognize excellence in design, performance and reliability in marine electronics products.
• The Association has introduced the well-known NMEA 0183 interface standard for data exchange.
• In 2001, the NMEA will introduce its new network standard, NMEA 2000, and set of standards for installation of marine electronics equipment.

The association sponsors programs aimed at improving professionalism at all levels of the marine electronics industry, including a national certification program for marine electronics technicians.
