OceanSaver AS is developing new technology for treating ballast water from ships. The company estimates market potential at around $1bn a year and will make the technology available commercially in 2006. OceanSaver operates in three stages:
-
Separation of “larger” organisms by filtration.
-
Supersaturation with nitrogen — and thereby reduction of the oxygen level.
-
Hydrodynamic cavitation by manipulation of the water characteristics.
The goal of the company is to develop other environmental technologies for the maritime industry as soon as OceanSaver® is fully developed and under commercialization. The technology is backed by Innovation Norway, Statoil and shipowners.
