The Port Authority's principal responsibility is the regulation and development of Jamaica's port and shipping industry. The Authority is also responsible for the safety of all vessels navigating the ports of entry and the regulation of tariffs.

Another 98 acres of yard space is to be paved at the South Terminal and the creation of a further 2,500 ft for berthing. 4 super-post-panamax cranes, 12 straddle carriers and 4 truckheads are on order. Due for completion in 2001 December.
