My group mates and I are in doing our final year project on "energy conservation onboard ships" we plan to do a detailed study on ship systems and practices that actually waste energy which can actually be reduced or be converted to do more work.
we would really appricate all the help we could obatain regarding this topic. We could use information regarding systems that waste energy, ways to reduce the wastage, and useful modifications. All who contribute will have their name prined on our report :D ...thx u

Ajanthan and your group- Greetings
Your message was way back in 2006. I did not see this message even though taking part in technical discussions.
Great Idea- Utilizing the waste heat energy from Diesel engines. There are few from my point of view as following- Thermal refrigeration systems- - Hot water can be circulated in Adsorption chiller systems and generate Air conditioning onboard ships. -This air conditioning systems operating in vaccum with water is being changed it phase changes from water to vapour and viceversa. Silical gel is used as adsorbent and desorbent. -Presently these units are operating at 0.6 COP maximum and this is the reason the equipment sizes are little bulky.
- Absorption systems also can be employed, however this is not successful so far in shipping.
There is another site Marine waste heat energy management that the waste can be utilized for additional work like Hot air engines, thermal cooling systems etc.,
With Main engine waste heat the entire engine room can be air conditioned in tropical areas. However, we are not successful in convincing the ship owners for installation of these units due to high cost.
A 100TR chiller cost about 100K EURO.
any further info required feel free to contact me.
