from our experience last 15 years in four stroke power plant engines using hfo fuel size rangine from 300mm to 500mm cylinder size many cases critical components at site at the time of overhaul new crowns are fitted with old skirts, old crowns with new skirts(though not advisable),different make piston assemblies replaced and used in the same engine ,say for example in 18cyliner engines 11 piston assembly from one approved manufacturer and another 7 by another brand. of course performance of engines not affected.
can some one let me know what kind of tolerances on weights for such large size piston components like skirt and total piston assemblies recommended and accepted. while we see these are manufactured to very close tolerances and inspected and certified even service engineers of engine builders changing different makes on the same emgine .
can some one from experience, design expert, service and piston manufacturer throw some light on this subject.
thanks subramanian

yes, we have seen it is quite common.but weight dats in some spare parts manuals given .but tolerances not mentioned. but i came across railway traction engines with 250 to 300mm size pistons weight tolerances are given which approximately works our plus minus 300gms on a total weight of piston weight of 23.5kgs( bare without piston pin). these are also two piece pistons and invariably here also piston assemblies are interchanged on same engine with two difeerent manufacturers supply.
we have also come across many engine builders accept this as a field practise.we donot know any one has an engine with two different manufacturers pistons in a new engine.since these are interchangeable it should be a possibilty

REGARDING INTERCHANGEABILITY OF PISTON ASSEMBLY,FEW HAVE WRITTEN THAT IT IS COMMON PRACTISE TO CHANGE WITH ANOTHER APPROVED BRAND OF PISTONS AVAILABLE ON DELIVERY OR SOME TIMES RECONDITIONED ONES OR SOME TIMESBORROWED FROM ANOTHER SHIP FOR SIMILAR ENGINES ARE USED IN MARINE ENGINES.THEREFORE WEIGHT AS LONG AS WITHIN SPECIFIED TOLERANCE LIMIT OR EVEN WORN OUT OR RECONDITIONED BUT APPROVED BY LLYODS OR OTHER AGENCIES INTERCHANGEABILITY OF PISTON IS A NORMAL PRACTISE. CAN SOME ONE GIVE THEIR SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE ON MAK ENGINE ,WARTSILA 46 OR MAN B&W ENGINES ALL FOUR STROKE SUCH INTERCHANGE WITHOUT ANY PERFORMANCE DETERIORATION.
WE UNDERSTND LOCOMOTIVES/RAILWAY ALSO IT IS COMMON PRACTISE TO INTERCHANGE PISTON ASSEMBLIES.
CAN SOME ONE ADVICE ON MEASUREMENTS,INSPECTIONS INCLUDING NDT TO BE CARRIED OUT ON WARTSILA 46 ENGINE PISTON CROWNS,SKIRTS,PISTON PINS AND ALSO COMPLETE PISTON ASSEMBLY.SUCH FULL DETAILS ARE NOT GIVEN IN SERVICE DATA OR MANUAL.
