Years ago, when MAN B&W were manufacturing large 2 stroke marine diesel engines designated as GF series, the characters G and F did not represent any particular words. Various improvements were carried out from time to time and sometimes new designations were given. Thus GF was followed by GB sreies and then by MC series. The new characters too B, M and C did not represent any words - though some engineers wrongly believe that MC stands for 'moment compensated'

Lately, however MAN B&W have assigned the meaning of C for 'concept'

According to MAN B&W project manual,M now represents engine programme and C, the concept. C also stands for 'camshaft controlled'and a new character E now stands of 'electronically controlled' (i.e. the so called intelligent engine without camshaft). Thus there now 2 series - MC and ME. Three additional characters are used in the beginning of the engine type - S, L and K for super long, long and short stroke engine with stroke bore ratio approximately 4.0, 3.2 and 2.8 respectively. An extra character C may sometimes be found at the end for a 'compact' version of the engine.

Incidentally, in the Sulzer engine evolution SD, RD, RND, RND-M, RLA, RLB and now RTA seies none of the characters represent any words. According to one source, when Sulzer changed over from loop to uniflow scavenged engine (with exhaust valve), they named the new series as RTA because it sounded phonetically very nice !!!

Moment Compensators are provided to reduce the effect of External Unbalanced Moments of 1st or 2nd order. In large 2 stroke marine engines, the 1st order moments generally does not cause much problem, but the 2nd order moment that acts with a frequency of twice the engine speed can cause vibration problems. Moment Compensators are installed in the chain drive (MAN B&W) to counteract the effect of these moments.

Guys i really need some information about power calculation of KAWASAKI MAN B&W MC Engine. Basically in 2-stroke engine, power can be calculated by the following formula PLAN, or trough Planimetering process. But this kind of engine not fitted with indicator drive which is planimetering measurement of diagram no possible. In what way or formula can this kind of engine the power can be calculated?

S60MC-C
S-Super long stroke(stroke/ bore ratio approx 4.0)
L-long stroke(approx 3.2)
K-short stroke(approx 2.8)
M- engine program
C--concept--(C-camshaft drive/E-electronic contol)
-C---design--(C-conpact/S-stationary)
