As far as i understand, there is an optimum point of fuel injection, depending on engine speed (and power?). Normally, this point is fixed, which means an engine not ruinning at the optimal point does not have optimum combustion. With variable injection, the point of injection is adapted to actual speed, thus optimizing combustion for each speed
