Hello all, I was lying awake at night wondering how ships and submarines are able to seal so efficiently prop shafts. What I do not understand is how no water is able to get in when the shaft exists internal and externally AND rotates. Surely a rotating object will imply that it is impossible to seal perfectly. Also, and more to the point, how are subs able to do it when operating at depths in excess of 1,000m (Russian Alpha class for example and not small specialist research subs such as Alvin, Mir etc). Sorry if this is a dump question, but marine technology is not my area….

Thanks
