What to Look for When Buying a Boat Carpet
Now, buying a carpet for your boat isn’t an easy task. As we mentioned above, the features and characteristics per carpet are all quite unique. That’s why you need to have a buying guide that will help you determine which carpet can suit your needs. These are some of the factors that we suggest you take into consideration:
- Size
The first thing you’ll want to take into consideration is the size of the carpet. The size of the carpet will really depend on the size of your boat’s flooring. You must measure the size of the flooring before you buy your carpet. Typically, you can find carpet sizes of 5, 6, or 8 feet. You can choose whichever three suits your boat best.
- Weight
The next thing you need to take into consideration is the weight of the carpet. This is important because it determines how much fiber you can find in the carpet. The heavier the carpet, the more fibers are found in it. The more fibers present, the better the quality of the carpet. More fibers also mean higher durability and higher shelf life. You determine the weight rating through the measurement of ounces.
- Adhesive
The next thing you want to take note of is the adhesive that the boat carpet uses. This is crucial because it determines how well the carpet sticks to the floor. If your boat has a rubber backing, we recommend that you use water-based glue since these types do a better job at sticking. Alcohol-based adhesives are also not too bad but they have a higer risk of losing their stickiness over some time. As a whole, we recommend that you use water-based glue.
- Resistance to External Factors
When you’re at sea, you’re at the mercy of the weather. With that in mind, you need to make sure that your carpet is resistant to all of that. At the very least, your carpet has to be able to withstand harsh UV rays and water. Other things that your carpet needs to be resistant to include mold, mildew, and rust. As long as your carpet has all of these features, it should last pretty long.
- Color and Style
While this isn’t really a very crucial factor to consider, it does help to make your boat interior look more appealing. The style and color that you choose will really depend on your own eye for creativity. We recommend that you buy the one that has a color that matches the color of the seats, chairs, walls, and hull of the boat.
Other Important Factors to Consider
What is a boat carpet?
A boat carpet is a type of carpet that is specifically made for protecting your boat from external elements that may affect your boat. These boat carpets are typically waterproof, UV proof, and overall weatherproof. At the same time, it is also used for giving comfort to the people on your boat when they walk inside and prevent accidents. Because of the water that gets into the boat, it’s not uncommon for people to slip on the flooring. The carpet ensures that you don’t slip even though water gets into the boat. The carpet absorbs the water so that the floor doesn’t become slippery. Finally, it gives your boat a whole new look. A little color can actually go a long way when it comes to style and design. Add some carpeting to give it a fresh new look.
How does it work?
It works pretty much just like any other carpeting that you install in your home. You measure the flooring, buy the appropriate carpet size, and bring out your tools. From there, you use some water-based glue and brush it on the floor and stick the carpet to the area that you want covered. After that, you’ll have a wonderful carpet that can be used to protect the boat from the weather elements and protect the people on the boat from falling down. Once you have a nice carpet, you can even ask your guests to kneel or sit down on the boat floor since it’s now pretty comfortable.
What are the different types of boat carpets?
When we differentiate the different types of boat carpets, we usually categorize them by the material used to build them. With that in mind, here are some of the boat carpet types that you may choose from:
- Vinyl Carpet
The first type that we’d like to talk about is the vinyl type carpet. This is one of the easiest to install and also the best for those who want to ensure resistance to slipping. The disadvantage of this carpet is that it is not resistant to UV rays so if you leave it under the sun for too long, it will wear out. We recommend that you buy this for your boat interior so it won’t be that exposed to sunlight.
- PVS
Another type that is pretty noteworthy type. It is waterproof and mold proof making it ideal for boat owners that always get water into their boats. Like vinyl though, this one also isn’t UV proof. The advantage of this one over vinyl is that it’s more compact and better for smaller sized boats.
- Rubber
We can say that rubber is the best material to use if you want to fully prevent slipping. Rubber material is completely water absorbent and will make sure that your flooring won’t be slippery no matter how much water gets on the floor. Rubber is not completely UV proof but it has stronger resistance than vinyl or PVS. However, the heat will get absorbed by the rubber and make it very hot to step on.
- Drainage Tile
While it’s expensive, it’s one of the most efficient carpet that you can buy. The main advantage of this carpet is that it can remain dry for longer than most carpets since it allows water to go under the carpet. It’s also very easy to install.
Why do you need a boat carpet?
Here are some of the main benefits that you can get from having a boat carpet:
- Prevents slipping by absorbing the water
- Gives a totally fresh and new look
- Makes walking on your boat more comfortable
- Protects the boat from the weather
- Prevents the growth of mold and mildew
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use boat carpets on a car?
A: The cool thing about boat carpets is that they can be used on any surface. You can actually install boat carpets in your car or even in your house if you like. However, it’s not really something that we recommend because boat carpets are quite expensive and big. So you may have to cut it up so that it can fit in your car. In that sense, we don’t really think that it’s actually worth spending on. You can buy a regular car carpet for much cheaper. If ever you have any extra boat carpet that you cut up, then maybe you can install it inside your car. But it’s not recommended that you buy a boat carpet for your car.
Can I paint boat carpet?
A: Yes you can! Latex paint works pretty well with boat carpets so you may want to think about using latex paint for changing the color. You also have the option to dye the carpet if you don’t really want to mess with paint. What you can do is buy some carpet dye and paint all over the fibers so that you can change the color. However, one thing that you should not do is spray paint the carpet with normal spray paint. Always use a brush to coat the fibers with either dye or latex paint.
How to remove boat carpet from aluminum?
A: When you’re removing the existing boat carpet from your boat floor, you need to take into consideration the adhesive that sticks to the flooring. If ever you’re removing the boat carpet from an aluminum surface, you may want to consider using some acetone so you can clean off the adhesive. Whenever you take out each part of the carpet, use a cloth and acetone to wipe off the adhesive from the floor. Other than that, you may also use lacquer thinner instead of acetone. The advantage of lacquer thinner is that it isn’t very aggressive but it also works pretty well. Acetone is a little stronger and it can easily wipe off the adhesive. But you can use any of the two depending on what you want.
How to cut/ trim a boat carpet properly?
A: Trimming or cutting a boat carpet is extremely easy. All you have to do is bring out your utility knife and your measuring tape. First, use the measuring tape to decide which part you want to keep and which part you want to cut out. Once you measure that, you can mark that part so you’ll know where you can trace the utility knife. After that, bring out your knife and slowly cut out out the marked area. After the front is already cut, the back is most likely not cut yet. So to address this, turn the carpet over the cut out the same part on the back as well. Now that you have your carpet cut up into squares of your desired size, you may now install them at your own leisure.
How do I take out the old carpet?
A: Taking out the old carpet is pretty much like cutting it up. The only difference is that you’ll cut the middle first and then pull it out. So to do this, get your utility knife, cut out a hole in the middle and start pulling out from there. If the adhesive is a little too sticky, you can use acetone or lacquer thinner to loosen it up a bit. From there, slowly pull out each part of the carpet. The remains can be scraped out by using the back of a hammer. Any other remaining materials can be vacuumed and thrown away.
How to install and use?
A: If you’re installing or replacing a boat carpet, you can just follow these steps:
- Measure the area of the boat that you want covered by the carpeting
- Buy the right carpet for your boat surface (take color, size, material, and quality into consideration)
- Take out the old carpet if you’re going to replace an existing one
- Clean the floor before you apply any adhesive
- Apply the carpet adhesive on the area that you want to cover with the carpet
- After applying the adhesive, immediately place the carpet on the covered area and spread the carpet evenly
- If you left any area without any adhesive, add more adhesive under and start sticking
- Cut out any of the edges that aren’t even with the floor
After you’ve already installed the carpet, you can start using it. There’s not much to know about using the carpet. You can step on it, sit on it, and protect your boat from the elements.
How to clean and care?
A: Even though it’s not hard to clean and care for your boat carpet, it does take quite a bit of effort to do. To make things simple, we usually follow a step by step process using a vinegar and water mix along with some soap. You can follow the steps that we’ve laid out below:
- Mix some vinegar and water into a sprayer. We suggest that you mix 3 pints of vinegar and 2 gallons of water.
- Take out your vacuum cleaner and thoroughly vacuum out all the dry dirt that can be found on the market.
- Get out your garden hose and hose down the carpet with regular water until all parts of the carpet are completely soaked
- Use a brush to scrub out any dirt and then rinse again with water.
- Get out your 2-gallon sprayer with the vinegar mix inside and spray all areas of the carpet.
- Leave the solution there for a few minutes.
- After a few minutes, use your brush to scrub the carpet again.
- When the solution dries up, vacuum the carpet one more time and brush it loosely.
Aside from the vinegar mix, you may also use a soap and water mix. The and water mix consists of just a little bit of detergent in a 5-gallon bucket of water.
If the dirt is too stubborn (for instance, if your carpet has oil, grease or tar), then you may want to use special stain removing products found in the boat accessory store. The store usually carries a plethora of these types of items based on the type of boat carpet you have. You just need to go down to the store and take your pick. Instead of the vinegar or soap and water mix, use the stain remover instead.
What is the warranty?
A: The warranty of the carpet that you buy will ultimately depend on which brand you’re buying from. Most of the carpet manufacturers offer a warranty of 1 to 3 years depending on the product. However, there are a few carpets that have warranties that are longer. When you buy the product that you want, don’t forget to take into consideration the length of the warranty and the terms. Typically, the terms of these warranties cover the product for defects but with some limitations. Just check the terms of each individual brand you’re looking at to get a clearer picture.
Where to buy?
A: There are so many places where you can buy boat carpets. Primarily, you can shop for boat carpets in the supplier’s website. A lot of them have e-commerce platforms where you can order directly and have the products shipped to you. If you want to shop in a platform that has more objective reviews though, you may want to try Amazon. Amazon is a great place to shop for boat carpets because you can see each product’s rating and features. With the information given, you can determine whether a boat carpet is for you or not.
But if online shopping isn’t really your thing, there are a lot of land-based boat and boat accessory stores in most neighborhoods where you can shop for boat carpets.
What is the price range of a typical boat carpet?
A: When looking at the price, we usually take into consideration the brand, the product variant, the seller, and the individual features. But if you want to get an idea of how much you’ll need to shell out for a boat carpet, we can give you a range of around $100 to up to $500 for the average carpet. Again, there are other considerations you need to factor in when determining the price.
